CVirtuosi GUS celebrate on stage

On Sunday 13th March 2011, the Virtuosi GUS Band reclaimed their title as the Midlands Champions for the second consecutive year at Bedworth Civic Hall. A "scorching" performance of Philip Wilby's 'Paganini Variations' under the musical direction of John Berryman gained Virtuosi GUS Band 'the double' for the first time since the region's contest was reorganised in 1994.

In an interview with 4barsrest, band manager Shawn Pagington said:

"To win the title is always great, but to retain it makes it special. It was a top class performance from everyone associated with Virtuosi GUS, and by common consent I think it was seen as being fully deserved.

"We hope to build on the success of last year's top six result at the National Finals. We've a number of goals, with the Masters our next target.

"There is a great mix of youth and experience at Virtuosi GUS now, with three teenagers on the top end and a few older heads to guide them in important lead positions such as Gary Wyatt on flugel. We are a confident band and things are really looking good at present".

The Virtuosi GUS Band would also like to offer congratulations to the Thoresby Colliery Band, who will be the other midlands band joining them at the National Finals on 15 October 2011 in the Royal Albert Hall.
